history of
tundra bowl

Picture
In 2012, Nate and Swagz started the site Retro4Ever. Originally dedicated to retro video game reviews and podcasts, it quickly evolved into a site that was dedicated more heavily to the world of Tecmo Super Bowl. That original site became the driving force behind our first ever public tournament offered in 2014 – Tundra Bowl I. At that time, we decided that the best date for our annual tournament would be during the Saturday of Pro Bowl weekend each year. There was often a lull on Pro Bowl weekend because very little of the fan-base has really taken the game seriously due to the lack of effort and poor design by the NFL. Not only did having the tournament at this time of year provide an excellent chance for players to come out to play the week before the Super Bowl, it also gives an opportunity for competitors to prepare for Tecmo Madison as it takes place just ten weeks later. Quickly, our Tundra Bowl tournament developed into a WORLD-CLASS Tecmo Super Bowl Tournament.

For those unfamiliar to the world of Tecmo Super Bowl tournaments, Tecmo Madison is the granddaddy of them all. In 2012, NFL Films produced an amazing ESPN documentary on the tournament (check out the coverage here). People come in from all over the country to test their skills against other competitors for huge, cash prizes. There is a vibrant, colorful Tecmo community with many different personalities and styles that one can appreciate in the environment of a tournament like Tecmo Madison’s. When we gave participants a tournament leading up to Madison, it allowed the players to sharpen those skills in preparation for it. In fact, when we created Tundra Bowl, it was my vision to pair with Tecmo Madison in a seamless partnership that would help provide both tournaments with players that may not have been participants in the past in either tournament.

Tundra Bowl certainly has its own identity, but no one can deny the influence and impact that Tecmo Madison has had on our event, and the Tecmo community. We here at Tundra Bowl will continue to provide the kind of tournament and atmosphere that you have come to know and love, now as the Tecmo Super Bowl National Championship. We became what we are today because of the enormous amount of support we get from players, participants, and the local media. There is no doubt that this support has really allowed us to flourish in our own right. Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to the exciting future and expansion of Tundra Bowl!
